SANDYMOUTH - 16 miles Carry on the A39 north of Bude, then take turn marked ‘Stibb’. Continue on to Sandymouth, which has marvellous sands, rock pools, and a wonderful coastal panorama. With cafe, toilets & car park.
PORT ISSAC - 16 miles Take A39 south towards Camelford. Before reaching Camelford, take B3314 signposted on the right ‘Delabole’. Continue until B3267, right turn signposted ‘Port Issac’. Historic and fascinating fishing village. Use car park on cliffs and explore the narrow streets by foot. Recently used as the filming location for the TV series "Doc Martin" and the film “Saving Grace” and frequented by TV’s Lawrence Llewelyn-Bowen.
POLZEATH - 19 miles Continue on B3314 as before, until signposted ‘Polzeath’. Wonderful beach, parking right on the sands. Small town, cafes, shops & surfing.
DAYMER BAY - 19.5 miles Follow road out of Polzeath, then turn right after approx. 0.5 mile. Daymer Bay on River Camel Estuary. A sheltered sunspot with expansive sands.
ROCK - 21 miles Continue on out of Polzeath. Home to wealthy yachting enthusiasts, Rock has good sandy beaches, sailing, and shops. You can leave the car here and catch the ferry for the most scenic route into Padstow, which makes a good day out.
PADSTOW - 25 miles If going by car, by-passing Wadebridge; otherwise 22 miles via passenger ferry from Rock. Charming fishing port with river & sea trips. Interesting small shops. Plenty of places to eat and drink & home of TV chef Rick Stein, who owns the “Seafood Restaurant” on the harbourside and the “Rick Stein Café” in Middle Street.
CLOVELLY - 25 miles Take A39, over the border into North Devon. This unique historic village, has pretty cottages all the way down its steep main street to the ancient harbour. There’s a visitor centre, car park and two pubs which serve good food.
MINIONS - 20 miles Off the A30, take the B3257, and then B3254, turning right at Upton Cross for a very pretty drive across Bodmin Moor. Nearby is “THE HURLERS”, a series of ancient stone circles, some 3,500 years old.
LLANHYDROCK (National Trust) - 23 miles 3 miles from Bodmin off the Liskeard road. The house offers a fascinating glimpse of what life ‘below stairs’ was really like in a large country house, with access to restored kitchens, bakehouse, larders, etc. There are also lovely gardens and a surrounding park. During the summer months they often have evening entertainment and music festivals in the gardens and grounds.
EDEN PROJECT - 30 miles If you are a gardening enthusiast you may want to visit this dramatic global garden, housing two (soon to be three), gigantic biospheres which contain tropical and temperate plants. Take the A39 & B3266 to Bodmin, joining the A30 signposted St. Austell, then take the A391 to EDEN. The Eden Project does get busy the summer and requires quite a bit of walking. There are various places which serve food, but the restaurant at the entrance is more expensive than the others on the valley floor. If you don't fancy much walking, there is a "Land Train" as an alternative.
THERE ARE A WEALTH OF PLACES TO BE EXPLORED ON DARTMOOR, HERE ARE JUST TWO:-
LYDFORD GORGE (National Trust) - 25 miles The famous gorge of the River Lyd. Lovely river walks with a 90 ft. waterfall. Parking, shop, refreshments. (Trainers or sensible shoes required for narrow slippery paths).
MORWELLHAM QUAY Theme Village - 30 miles Inland port of the River Tamar, restored & brought back to life. The staff are dressed in period costumes, with trains into the old copper mines, craft exhibitions, shops, café & wagon rides.
